05/30/20 ONE OF THE MOST MISUSED VERSES — In Matthew 18:20 (CSB) Jesus says, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, I am there among them.” CONTEXT is nearly universally agreed as the #1 MOST IMPORTANT aspect of careful Bible interpretation. In verses 15-20 Jesus is teaching about what we call “Church Discipline.” IN CONTEXT, verse 20 is NOT a blessing for small groups or small church crowds on holidays or Sundays with inclement weather and low attendance. It’s abundantly clear from the CONTEXT that He is talking about the unpleasant discussions and making tough decisions involving a sinful non-repentant church member. I have personally been involved in several of these over the years. Jesus is encouraging church leaders (plural) to persevere, promising to be there, giving divine guidance and support.
Folks, we need to BE CAREFUL as we attempt to read, study, examine and apply the truths of God’s Word!
