04/22/20 PERSISTENT PRAYER—My wife and I pray aloud together at least four times each day (early morning and all 3 meals). And in nearly every prayer recently, we have asked God to remove the Covid-19 plague. Today I had the funny feeling that I was pestering, annoying God. My entire life I’ve heard a few say, “I trust God—I only pray about something ONCE!” On the surface it sounds kind of faithful and right.
But Luke 18:1-8 (CSB) says 1 Now He told them a parable on the need for them to pray always and not give up. 2 There was a judge in a certain town who didn’t fear God or respect people. 3 And a widow in that town kept coming to him, saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ 4 “For a while he was unwilling, but later he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or respect people, 5 yet because this widow keeps pestering me, I will give her justice, so that she doesn’t wear me out by her persistent coming.’ ” 6 Then the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. 7 Will not God grant justice to his elect who cry out to him day and night? Will he delay helping them? 8 I tell you that he will swiftly grant them justice. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on earth?”
You might think that Dutch Sheets is a new set of bed linens to help you sleep better. Maybe. But in his book Intercessory Prayer, author Dutch Sheets reminds us that we are in a (spiritual) battle; to remove a fierce obstacle takes lots of ammunition. He suggests that Persistent Prayer is like stockpiling ammo for the preemptory strike at the enemy. So, as Jesus commands and Sheets suggests, let’s ALL Pray Daily for Almighty God to Stop this Plague ASAP (As Soon As Providential)!
