Passion Week #2—Jesus “Turns the Tables” on the Jewish leaders: Matthew 21:12-13 (CSB) 12 Jesus went into the temple and
threw out all those buying and selling. He overturned the tables of the money
changers and the chairs of those selling doves. 13 He said to
them, “It is written, My house will
be called a house of prayer, but you are making
it a den of thieves!” (see
Isaiah 56:7; Jeremiah 7:11). Surrounded by cruel oppression and extraordinary
needs of every kind, Jesus’s most pressing concern was the commercialization
and degradation of the religious establishment, which was offensive to Almighty
God.
An interesting and challenging questions I’ve
asked several groups before is this: If Jesus showed up at your church, what
“tables” would He overturn?
